What To Focus On When Starting A New Project

I’ve started many things in my life, which I couldn’t get to the end. I am used to analyzing my results, so I’ve asked myself many times what I’ve done wrong that made me fail. After a lot of analysis, researching and reading, I think I’ve found a simple system that can help anyone to simply get things done in his life – both personal and professional.

The truth is that we can easily change the results we have, only if we know the right formula. And it consists of only two elements:

  • The One Thing
  • Motion

The One Thing

It all comes to this book, which I’ve already told you about – Gary Keller – The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results.

This is one of the books that touched my life to the fullest extent and I believe it can also make an impact on you. One of the main themes of the book is to ask yourself what you should do right now that will make everything else easy or unnecessaryThe author calls it “the focusing question” and says, that you have to ask yourself that question every time you are wondering which task to start first.

Transferred to the plane of starting a new business, my advice is to define a goal for no more than 90 days ahead and decide which is the only activity that will make the achievement of this goal inevitable. You have the right to choose only one activity. This is your “one thing.” This is the activity that will move the needle the most and that is why we are focusing on it.

Of course, you need to keep track of your results. That is why I want you to create a simple table where you will just mark whether you have done your one thing for the day or not. There is no third option. Here is an example of such table:

Meditate for 10 minutes per day
Be calmer and experience flow more

You need to make sure that you will mark every day that you have accomplished your one thing. I personally use Evernote so that I can easily pull it up on my phone and mark it as done before I go to sleep.

Furthermore, you can create more than one goal for the 90 days so that you can have more than one supporting habits. At the end of the day, you just need to mark what is done and what is not.

The Most Important Word

The most important word when you are at the beginning of something new is motion. This is what will save you.

What do I have in mind when saying motion? What I have in mind is to block a certain period of time every day to spend on your one thing. It’s not necessarily about one hour. You can start with only 15-20 minutes a day.

What really matters is to do it every day, because that’s how you build a habit. The more you do it, the easier it becomes, because you get used to it. Once you get used to it, you don’t need to put that much effort and energy on it, just like you don’t put much effort when brushing your teeth (I hope).

Even if you have a regular job, you can always spend half an hour a day after work to do the one thing for your project. And I mean a focused work with no distractions. I mean really blocking this time only for your one thing for the day.

If you can’t spend that much time, spend 20 minutes, if not – only 10 minutes. But if you’re unable to spend at least 10 minutes a day on the one thing that will move the needle towards your goal, you better give up, because you don’t deserve the success you are aiming at.

You have to be in constant motion. Start immediately and never stop even for a day (well you can take a break on Sunday).

This allows you to start easier, because if you know you’ve blocked and set a certain time in a day, you will be more motivated to sit down and work on the project during this time. And moreover – it will become easier and easier for you to do that since you are building a habit. At one point you will be able to do your one thing without any conscious effort on your side and this is the real goal.

Could you imagine that – moving the needle towards your goal every day without having to spend any willpower on that? Isn’t that amazing? It is and it is possible. You just need to get moving. Trust me on that.

To summarize what I recommend you to do when starting a new project:

  • You set a goal for 90 days ahead
  • Decide what your one thing will be for that project that will move the needle of the project the most and will make everything else easy or unnecessary
  • You start a daily motion in this direction by blocking a certain part of the day for your one thing, in order to build a habit

That’s it! It’s not that hard at all, right? If you want to know more, I want to present to your attention a video, which is the best and the simplest material for setting goals and building habits around them, which I’ve came across. I use it and I’m delighted with the results.

The speaker is one of the most successful Internet entrepreneurs in the world and a person, who I consider a mentor, even though I haven’t spent any personal time with him.
